Suraj Madoori, MA, MPH, MSJ

Suraj Madoori is the Director of Policy Advocacy at AVAC where he oversees and collaborates with AVAC’s Policy Advocacy team and partners on policy goals aimed at expanding access to HIV prevention, supporting R&D and programs, and advancing global health equity. In this role, Suraj formulates the organization’s policy strategy and drives AVAC’s leadership across federal, multilateral, and regulatory policy. 

Suraj has worked in domestic and global health rights and policy for over 15+ years. Starting in his hometown of Chicago, he served as a case manager for HIV-positive LGBTQI+ youth at Howard Brown Health and subsequently joined the AIDS Foundation of Chicago’s (AFC) policy department. At AFC, Suraj oversaw the HIV Prevention Justice Alliance (HIV PJA) – a 14,000-member national advocacy and mobilization network - and then became the Associate Director of Federal Policy. Prior to joining AVAC, Suraj was the US & Global Health Policy Director for Treatment Action Group (TAG) – helping lead the organization’s policy work on HIV, tuberculosis, HCV, and allied health & human rights issues. 

He’s served in public health advisory roles with CDC’s Advisory Council for the Elimination of Tuberculosis (ACET), WHO’s Civil Society Taskforce on TB (CSTF), and currently as a member of the Developed Countries NGO Delegation (DevDel) to the Board of the Global Fund. As a former journalist, his writing has appeared in PLOS, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Health Affairs, POZ Magazine, Treatment Issues, Windy City Times, and The Journal for Public Health Preparedness and Disaster Medicine. Suraj holds three graduate degrees in medical journalism, public health, bioethics and health policy. He is based in Chicago, Illinois.
