WHO Director-General calls for sustained resources for global health
January 30, 2011 -- Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), recently said that investments in global health must be sustained in order to build on successes from the past year, including achievements in research and science. For example, a commitment to global health research and development led to the launch of a new meningitis vaccine in Africa, a new diagnostic test for tuberculosis, and progress in vaccines for diarrheal disease and pneumonia.
"Will progress stall? Will powerful innovations, like the meningitis vaccine, like the vaccines for preventing diarrheal disease and pneumonia, like the new diagnostic test for tuberculosis, fall short of reaching their potential?", Chan asked, addding, "Public health has been on a winning streak. But will we still have the resources to maintain, if not accelerate, these gains?" Chan made her remarks to the WHO executive board in advance of the next World Health Assembly in May.
