Scientists call on Congress to fund research at NIH

July 27, 2011 --A coalition of researchers and other stakeholders recently wrote to key members of Congress, urging them to continue funding scientific research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The letter from the Coalition to Promote Research (CPR) comes as some groups are calling for a moratorium on NIH grant-making and an investigation into research that is funded.

“NIH is the premier biomedical and behavioral research institution in the world. Its mission is to support science to improve the health and well-being of all humanity,” the letter reads, adding, "Congressional decisions rescinding funding for individual grants that have been approved through NIH's process not only undermines the integrity of the world's premiere scientific enterprise, but also the work of our nation's top scientists, and ultimately, the public's health.” It was sent to Dennis Rehberg (R-MT.), chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and ranking member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).

The coalition has also put together a six-page primer defending research. "The development of effective interventions for HIV/AIDS prevention depends on a scientific foundation of biomedical research as well as behavioral research that identifies the psychological, social, and cultural causes of risk-taking behaviors and the mechanisms that facilitate behavioral change,” the primer reads.
