Researchers develop non-invasive dengue test
June 23, 2011 -- Researchers in Singapore have developed an inexpensive and non-invasive test for dengue fever that eliminates the need to collect blood from patients. The researchers hope it could yield a commercial test as simple as home-based pregnancy tests. The need for a blood sample is one of the main obstacles with dengue diagnosis tools, particularly for children, according to the researchers. They add that the "tendency to forgo a dengue blood test is high". A non-invasive method could potentially improve surveillance and early detection of cases, which could result in improved control efforts. The test is reported in the June edition of PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. See the link below for more details.
