State Department leads discussion of global health innovation
March 22, 2011 -- The US Department of State recently hosted a symposium with stakeholders from the public and private sectors on the role of innovation in addressing global health. During the symposium, US officials emphasized the need for the public and private sectors to increasingly use innovative solutions to address emerging global health challenges, including through public-private partnerships. Officials also highlighted the role of science diplomacy in US foreign policy through programs such as the Global Health Initiative and support from agencies such as the US Agency for International Development (USAID) for partnerships such as the Medicines for Malaria Venture.
US officials who spoke at the event included Secretary of State for Economic, Energy, and Agricultural Affairs Robert Hormats; Executive Director of the GHI Lois Quam; Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs’ Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Science, Space, and Health Jonathan Margolis; and USAID Global Health Administrator Amie Batson. Speakers from the health industry included Andrew Witty, president and CEO of GlaxoSmithKline; John Castellani, president and CEO of PhRMA; and Neeraj Mistry of the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases, Sabin Vaccine Institute.
