Investments in global health research have created tens of thousands of jobs in New Jersey, new data finds
February 16, 2011 -- Public and private investments in global health research and development (R&D) have produced tens of thousands of jobs in medicine, research, public health, and education in New Jersey, according to new data from Research!America (R!A). According to a new fact sheet, New Jersey’s health-related R&D industry had more than a $60 billion economic impact on the state in 2009.
R!A has also released a new statewide poll, which found that nearly three-quarters (73%) of New Jersey residents think spending money on research to improve health globally is important to jobs and incomes in the state. According to the poll, 94% of New Jersey residents think it is important for the state to be a leader in health R&D. The state is currently third in the country for total investment in health R&D. New Jersey is also home to 17 of the world’s 20 largest pharmaceutical, medical technology, and diagnostic companies, which contributed nearly $30 billion to the state’s economy and accounted for more than 55,000 jobs in 2009. The New Jersey data is part a six-state effort by R!A, which previously focused on Illinois. See the links below for more information.
