USAID outlines impacts of possible global health funding cuts on TB programs

February 15, 2011 -- During a recent presentation to tuberculosis (TB) advocates and implementers, representatives from the US Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Bureau for Global Health outlined the impact to its TB programs if funded at the fiscal year (FY) 2010 levels, or if reduced to FY 2008 levels. This presentation was part of a series of portfolio review meetings to consider US investments in global health programs. In addition, the budgetary implications are highly relevant as Congress moves to finalize funding levels for the current fiscal year, and the Obama Administration issues its proposed budget for FY 2012.

During the presentation, stakeholders expressed concerns about the impacts of funding reductions on USAID’s TB work. Some experts in clinical research said that there would be severe impacts on the development of game-changing new tools to fight TB, as well as the delivery of new tools in TB-endemic areas where they are needed most. During the meeting, USAID officials said that they are working hard to determine the best way to manage scarce resources. See the link below for more information.
