New article highlights momentum in tuberculosis vaccine development

June 13, 2011 -- A new article in the June issue of Health Affairs finds that collaboration and partnership, including with emerging economies, will be critical to the successful development and future introduction of new tuberculosis (TB) vaccines in endemic countries. The article outlines the growing complexity of the global TB epidemic and underscores the scientific and resource challenges associated with the development of new vaccines against TB.

“Since 2000, there has been tremendous momentum in the clinical development of new vaccine candidates, but challenges remain,” said author Lewellys Barker, senior medical advisor at the Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation. He added, “Greater collaboration between groups already involved along with novel partnerships among researchers and policymakers in emerging economies where TB is endemic will be critical to making new TB vaccines a reality.” See the press release below for more details.
