Health Affairs issue highlights vaccine research, development, and financing

June 10, 2011 -- The June issue of Health Affairs is devoted to global health vaccines, including new vaccines in the research pipeline, creative models for developing and paying for vaccines, and overcoming remaining challenges in vaccine science, financing, and delivery. According to articles in the new issue, vaccinating children around the world against infectious diseases has saved the lives of millions over the past several decades. New opportunities exist to overcome remaining challenges—and save another 6.4 million lives over the current decade.

The articles focus on issues such as successful approaches to vaccine development and delivery, such as product development partnerships (PDPs); vaccines in the research pipeline, including as many as 12 new vaccines that may be rolled out in the next decade against diseases such as typhoid, malaria, and dengue; and additional challenges ahead, such as the need for new scientific approaches and a renewed focus on basic research. In addition, Health Affairs has issued a related policy brief on vaccines that calls on US policymakers to continue investing in science, particularly related to infectious diseases. The brief also calls on the United States to promote PDPs and other innovative financing mechanisms, such as advance market commitments. See the links below for more information.
