New TB test might be used to measure HIV viral load
February 8, 2011 -- The diagnostics company Cepheid and the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) recently announced a new collaboration to speed the development of a rapid HIV viral load test. The viral load test will run on the platform of Cepheid’s GeneXpert, a groundbreaking rapid test to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) and drug resistance. “Given the particular challenges presented by HIV and TB co-infection, we believe that the Xpert HIV viral load test will be an excellent complement to Xpert [TB test], dramatically improving endemic countries’ capacity to diagnose and manage these infections,” FIND CEO Giorgio Roscigno said. He added, “This new collaboration confirms the possibility of creating diagnostic platforms for several diseases, thus extending the reach of scarce resources intended to combat them.” See the links below for more details.
