Report highlights Defense Department's contributions to global health
July 6, 2011 -- A new report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies has found that the Department of Defense (DoD) overseas medical research laboratories fundamentally contribute to US military readiness while also helping to develop lifesaving global health products. In addition, the report found that overseas military research facilities help to strengthen scientific capacity in host countries; attract other US agencies and multiple business, university and foundation partners; contribute to related scientific and health activities; and build military-to-military collaboration.
In spite of these assets, DoD's overseas research labs face several challenges, including a lack of financial and personnel resources. Their achievements are also under-recognized at policy levels within Congress and the Executive Branch, according to the report. It recommends that the laboratories need more sufficient and predictable funding, and that research efforts be better integrated across the DoD. See the link below for more details.
