Presidential commission announces panel to examine current protections for global clinical trials
March 4, 2011 -- The Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues earlier this week announced an international panel that will examine whether current rules adequately protect volunteers in global clinical trials. President Barack Obama asked his advisers to form the panel to evaluate the efficacy of current US rules and international standards for the protection of human subjects in scientific studies supported by the US Government. The panel will also evaluate if current rules protect research participants from harm or unethical treatment, domestically as well as abroad.
The panel includes four members from the bioethics commission and 12 experts from ten countries. Although the panel is charged with examining clinical trials funded by the US Government, it is also free to examine trials run by pharmaceutical companies or other entities, Amy Gutmann, chair of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, said. A report is expected by the end of 2011. See the links below for more information.
