Secretary Clinton offers preview of development strategy

October 26, 2010 -- In an essay in Foreign Affairs, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton offers a preview of the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR), a process undertaken by the State Department and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to recommend updated approaches to international diplomacy and development. In the essay, Clinton writes that the QQDR will elevate development as a priority of US foreign policy. "Strengthening middle classes around the world will be key to creating the just and sustainable international order that lies at the heart of the United States' national security strategy," she writes. Clinton adds that Congressional leadership and support are needed to allocate the necessary financial resources for US global development and diplomacy efforts.

In related news, the New York Times recently profiled USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah’s efforts to re-energize the agency. Shah aims to bring entrepreneurialism and innovation to USAID in an effort to solve some of the world’s most pressing development challenges, as well as institute improved monitoring and evaluation. His efforts recently received support from the White House’s new development policy, which pledges to restore USAID as the premier US aid agency. See the links below for more details.
