Leaders call on endemic countries to increase investments in science
October 21, 2010 -- During the Third World Academy of Sciences meeting in India, leaders called for endemic countries to place a greater emphasis on scientific research and application. India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, “We need to invest in science. We need to invest in scientific infrastructure—in our schools, in our laboratories. We need to promote an ecosystem that rewards innovation, creativity, and excellence.” South Africa's minister for science and technology, Naledi Pandor, said that developing countries should come together more regularly, adding that improved linkages between researchers and policymakers would help developing countries address issues such as poverty and disease.
