India and South Africa to launch joint vaccine research project
October 20, 2010 -- India and South Africa are expected to launch a joint HIV vaccine research project by the end of 2010, with a focus on basic science and HIV strains common in both countries. According to Virander Chauhan—director of the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in New Delhi, India—the five-year, $1 million dollar project will include approximately five research groups from each country with core competence in basic and HIV vaccine research. Chauhan added that a successful partnership could serve as a model for similar south–south collaborations and prompt other endemic countries to become involved in global health research.
