New report shows increase in research projects for diseases of the developing world

November 15, 2010 -- The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA) has released a new report that found drugmakers are working on more than 100 research and development (R&D) projects for diseases of the developing world. According to the report, the number of developing world medicine and vaccine projects undertaken by IFPMA companies increased from 84 in 2009 to 102 this year. The report also found that almost 80 percent of these R&D projects are being carried out with partners outside of the pharmaceutical industry, such as product development partnerships.

In related news, the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and the Oswald Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) have announced a collaboration to research and develop new and innovative medicines to treat diseases which disproportionately affect people living in the world’s poorest countries. The new collaboration builds on a long-standing relationship between Fiocruz and GlaxoSmithKline to manufacture vaccines for public health priorities in Brazil. These include polio, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), measles, mumps, rubella, rotavirus and most recently pneumococcal disease. The collaboration also aims to develop research and manufacturing capabilities in Brazil through technology transfer and scientific collaboration. See the links below for more details.
