WHO report on neglected tropical diseases calls for increased research to develop new drugs, diagnostics, vaccines, and other health products
October 15, 2010 -- The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its first report on neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), in which the agency said it aims to achieve “complete control and even elimination” of the diseases that affect one billion people each year. The report calls on governments and donors to invest more resources to fight 17 NTDs, which are “relatively neglected” by researchers but can cause blindness, heart damage, and death. “Research is needed to develop new diagnostics and medicines, and to make accessible interventions to prevent, cure, and manage the complications of all NTDs,” the report says, adding that a “research strategy is required to develop and introduce new medicines, notably for leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis; new methods for vector control; vaccines for dengue; and new diagnostics that will be accessible to all who need them.” See the links below for more information.
