BARDA awards four contracts for global health research
September 15, 2010 -- The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), recently awarded grants for global health research and development. BARDA awarded the grants to the non-for-profit global health organizations PATH and the Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI), as well as the pharmaceutical companies VaxDesign Corp and Pfenex Inc. The grants total $53.6 million over three years and focus on developing health products, such as vaccines, to fight global influenza and anthrax contamination.
BARDA’s role at HHS is to manage the procurement and development of medical tools and technologies such as vaccines, diagnostics, and drugs. Specifically, BARDA’s Strategic Science and Technology Division identifies and funds research for medical tools and technologies that show significant promise in reducing global illness.
