Police seize counterfeit medicines in Africa

August 27, 2010 -- Authorities have seized ten tons of counterfeit medicines in six east African countries and arrested suspects involved in the manufacturing, trafficking and selling of fake medical products. The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) coordinated the operation with the World Health Organization (WHO). Production and sale of fake medical products are increasing worldwide, particularly in Africa, where counterfeit drugs are widely available for conditions such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. According to WHO, fake products can be detrimental to public health efforts in endemic countries and can lead to death in some cases. Representatives from the six east African countries are scheduled to meet in Zanzibar next week to discuss the operation and the extent of the counterfeiting problem.
