WHO prequalifies pneumococcal vaccine
August 24, 2010 -- The World Health Organization has prequalified Pfizer’s pneumococcal vaccine, Prevenar 13, allowing for the procurement of the vaccine by United Nations agencies, governments, and other organizations for use in national immunization programs. The vaccine protects against 13 different disease-causing strains of pneumococcal disease, which is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable death in children younger than age five worldwide. The vaccine was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in February 2010. Earlier this year, Pfizer entered into a ten-year agreement to provide Prevenar 13 to infants and young children in the poorest countries worldwide. See the links below for more information.
