NIH drug pipeline for rare, neglected diseases launches five pilot projects
The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases (TRND) program, established last year with $24 million in funding, is a drug development pipeline that aims to produce new treatments for rare and neglected diseases. TRND recently launched five pilot projects to spur drug development for the neglected tropical diseases schistosomiasis and hookworm, as well as three rare diseases. The projects were selected because they demonstrate a range of issues that can hinder drug development, such as the high cost of animal studies and meeting regulatory requirements from the US Food and Drug Administration before human trails can begin.
