HIV organizations, US agencies observe World AIDS Vaccine Day
In honor of World AIDS Vaccine Day (May 18), several nonprofit organizations working to fight HIV released statements and authored articles and blog posts highlighting the urgent need for a vaccine to prevent HIV, and the hope in the future of HIV vaccine research. The organizations—including AIDS Action, the AIDS Institute, the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative—point to several signs of hope on the horizon. The results of last year September’s Thai Prime Boost trial show that an AIDS vaccine is possible, and recent Obama administration initiatives such as the Presidential Study Directive on Global Development Policy and the Global Health Initiative show promise for increased US commitments to global health research and development.
US agencies including the US Agency for International Development and the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases also commemorated the day—which is known as National HIV Vaccine Awareness Day in the United States—through statements and blog posts.
