New initiative fosters innovation to prevent preterm births
November 8, 2011 -- The Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillborn (GAPPS) has issued a call for a grant program it is rolling out to help spur innovative new ideas to prevent preterm births.
The Preventing Preterm Birth initiative (PPB) will provide funds for projects that “explore gestational origins, biological mechanisms, and the immunological response to infection and nutritional deficiency which lead to preterm birth, especially in the developing world.”
The funding for this project is provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of the Grand Challenges in Global Health. The Gates Foundation funding will enable GAPPS to provide several projects with $1-2 million each to help identify biological mechanisms leading to preterm birth.
