FDA awards nearly $3 million in TB research grants

October 5, 2010 -- The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that it will grant $2.9 million to support six research projects aimed at developing new tools to diagnose, treat, and prevent tuberculosis (TB). The support will be provided through FDA’s Critical Path Initiative, the agency’s strategy for driving innovation in the way medical products are developed, evaluated, and manufactured. The Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation and the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development—members of the Global Health Technologies Coalition—are among the six grantees, who were chosen from a total of 30 applications. “FDA recognized an urgent need for the engagement and leadership of public health institutions to promote this critical, but neglected, area of medical therapeutics,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.
