This month, several cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) were reported in India, reinforcing the need for research and development (R&D) that will help address the ever-growing challenge of increasing resistance to available TB tools.

First-ever HHS global health strategy includes goal to catalyze research and innovation

 

The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently released its first-ever global health strategy to help the agency increasingly engage in efforts to improve the health and well-being of people around the world. While emphasizing the need for this new strategy, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that “today, we can no longer separate global health from America’s health…We need to look beyond our borders to improve health inside our country.”

Agency spotlight: NIH

 

A joint House-Senate Conference Committee recently finalized an appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2012 that authorizes and funds the new National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) at the NIH. NIH leadership believes that NCATS will help advance research and development for new health products, including global health tools.
