New meningitis vaccine launched in Africa

Partnerships key to developing low-cost health tool
A new meningitis vaccine costing 50 cents per dose was distributed for the first time on December 6 in Burkina Faso. The new vaccine marks the first time in history that a vaccine has been specifically designed for Africa. Developing this lifesaving vaccine highlights a highly successful partnership model and further emphasizes the role of key stakeholders—from the World Health Organization (WHO), pharmaceutical companies, product-development partnerships, the US Government, and manufacturers in the developing world—to improving access to much-needed health tools.

World AIDS Day marked by breakthroughs in science
The run-up to this year's World AIDS Day on December 1 was studded with monumental achievements in HIV/AIDS prevention research. Over the last 16 months, we have seen several scientific breakthroughs that have the potential to change the course of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, including landmark discoveries in vaccines, microbicides, and using antiretroviral drugs for prevention.

The WHO on December 8 announced that it has endorsed a new test for tuberculosis and drug resistance. The new test was co-developed by GHTC member the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND). Development of the new diagnostic was financed in part by the United States' lead agency for health research, the National Institutes of Health.
