Sparking innovation to save lives

The Global Health Technologies Coalition (GHTC) has released its second annual policy report, which documents promising policy actions taken over the past year in the areas of US investments in global health and international development, regulatory pathways to ensure the safety and efficacy of health tools, and incentives and innovative financing mechanisms to spur global health product development. The report offers recommendations for how US policymakers can continue to take the lead in improving health worldwide.

GHTC event highlights US role in promoting science for global health
Through the development and delivery of new health tools, innovation and science “can have an impact” and “gives us hope,” Elizabeth Bukusi, chief research officer and deputy director at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), said at a recent event hosted by the GHTC. The event highlighted the need for and role of new global health products such as vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, and microbicides. During the event, a high-level panel discussed recent advances in global health research and key policy issues most critical to meet the future needs of the developing world.

Agency spotlight: NASA
NASA and USAID recently agreed to expand their joint efforts to address international development challenges such as health, food security, climate change, and energy and environmental management. Under a five-year agreement, the agencies agreed to continue collaborations to stimulate innovative science and technology solutions to international development challenges by using Earth science data, research results, computer models, visualization applications and remote-sensing techniques.
