Donors commit historic vaccine funding

Major public and private donors have achieved a milestone in global health by committing historic levels of funding to deliver vaccines to more than 250 million of the world’s poorest children. At Monday’s pledging conference hosted by the GAVI Alliance in London, donors committed $4.3 billion, exceeding GAVI’s initial target of $3.7 billion for the conference, to deliver lifesaving vaccines against global health diseases. Leaders also stressed the need to support research for vaccines that do not yet exist, including for diseases such as HIV and malaria, in order to save even more lives in the future.

Researchers cite progress and momentum on HIV/AIDS
To mark the recent 30th anniversary of the discovery of HIV/AIDS, scientists and researchers have cited recent progress and momentum in developing new treatment and prevention tools. For example, scientists and advocates have been focusing on developing a safe and effective HIV vaccine, particularly as increased access to effective therapies has turned HIV/AIDS into a chronic disease and treatment costs have increased.

Agency spotlight: USPTO
In an effort to encourage innovations for global health and other issues, the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is implementing a pilot program to use the patent review system to spark the development and delivery of technologies that address humanitarian needs. Prize winners will receive a voucher for fast-track patent review that can be transferred on the open market.
