USAID head highlights science in international development

The United States "can leave an unparalleled legacy in global health in this next decade. To seize this opportunity, we will need to do things very differently." In the first-ever speech at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by a sitting administrator for the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Rajiv Shah charted a course forward for the United States' international development programs. He also issued a challenge to stakeholders in the US Government and international development community to prioritize inventing and introducing new solutions for the future.

Kenya launches new vaccine made possible by innovative financing
Earlier this week, Kenya began immunizing children with a new vaccine to protect against pneumonia—the world's leading killer of children younger than age five. The vaccine was purchased through the first Advance Market Commitment (AMC), a unique funding effort to bring pneumococcal vaccines to millions of children worldwide.

Agency spotlight: CDC
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has operations in more than 54 countries, and the agency is engaged in many global health research efforts. For example, CDC collaborated with global health organizations and with local health officials in Africa to help bring a new meningitis vaccine through clinical development to public health availability. CDC is also well known for its efforts to improve disease surveillance and testing.

According to the new data, investments in global health research have produced tens of thousands of jobs in medicine, research, public health, and education in the state.
