Daily antiretroviral pills protect against HIV infection, study finds

November 29, 2010 -- A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine has found that daily antiretroviral drugs provide protection against HIV infection through a prevention method known as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. The researchers found a combination of two oral antiretrovirals taken once daily provided 44 percent additional protection from HIV among men or transgender women who have sex with men who also received a comprehensive package of prevention services, compared with the study participants who took placebos. The study included nearly 2,500 participants in six countries and was coordinated by the Gladstone Institutes of the University of California, San Francisco. It received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Additional studies are currently under way to determine if similar results can be duplicated, as well as if the same or other antiretrovirals protect other populations.
