'Now is the time' to 'deploy science, technology, and innovation in the service of humanity,' US leaders write

"We are on the cusp of a new era in global development," Rajiv Shah, administrator for the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and John Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, write in a Huffington Post blog post.

“Wise investments in the creation and distribution of scientific and technical knowledge will allow us to leapfrog development problems that previously took generations to tackle," Shah and Holdren write, adding, "Now is the time to think strategically, and across sectors and boundaries, about how we can better deploy science, technology, and innovation in the service of humanity, to advance development in ways that can dramatically and positively change people's lives." The authors also highlight a recent USAID meeting on leveraging science for international development, as well as President Obama’s commitment to prioritizing science, technology, and innovation in global development.
