GHTC member releases video highlighting product development partnerships
December 15, 2011 --After hosting a Congressional briefing last month to highlight the critical role of product development partnerships (PDPs) in global health research, GHTC member Research!America has released a video to show footage from the event. PDPs—which receive funding from the public, private and philanthropic sector—play a critical role in producing new lifesaving tools to help people around the world. The event featured speakers from many other GHTC member organizations, including: Aeras, the International Partnership for Microbicides , OneWorld Health, and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative. Reps. Brian Bilbray (R-CA) and Chris Van-Hollen (D-MD) co-sponsored the briefing.
According to a press release from Research!America, the panelists at the briefing “discussed how the non-profit PDP model speeds medical progress on diseases like HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria and diarrheal diseases. PDPs play a vital role in accelerating the research and development of critical health technologies like vaccines, drugs and diagnostics.”
In the video, Rep. Bilbray stressed that abandoning health research would be an “ill-timed and ill-conceived” plan and urged sustained public funding to make sure research progress continues. Other participants from the briefing reinforced this message by discussing the unique economic and health benefits that PDPs can provide to the global community. PDPs are also playing a critical role in developing exciting new tools like a tuberculosis (TB) vaccine that could reach the market as early as 2020 with the potential to save 1.4 million lives a year.
