Cancer in developing countries can be addressed with vaccines, drugs, experts say
August 20, 2010 -- A panel of experts recently stated that cancer is taking an increasing toll on people in low-income countries and called for a new focus on fighting the disease. According to the experts, a range of global health tools—including inexpensive and generic drugs, and vaccines against the human papillomaviruses that cause cervical cancer and the hepatitis viruses that cause liver cancer—can be deployed to prevent and treat the disease. Eighty percent of cancer deaths take place in low-income countries, and rates of cancer in low- and middle-income countries have increased markedly during the past three decades.
